At Lighthouse Plank Floors we specialize in flooring made from the finest European Oak (Janka Hardness: 1360). There are a few reasons why European Oak is a superior material for wood flooring. In general, European Oak has a slower growth cycle which results in tighter grain patterns, it also has less variability in natural color and tannin content which allows for greater depth, warmer hues and authentic coloration. Finally, the Europeans cut logs differently than we do in the United States. They use a technique which involves taking a “square” from the center of the log, called a cant, and slicing it straight through. This results in a wider plank with gorgeous cathedral grain patterns near the center, flanked by beautiful vertical grains toward the outer edges. This method of sawing and grain pattern also results in a more stable floor and better floor performance.
